Sacred Moon

While I was in Bryce Canyon last week with Royce Bair and the other attendees of his Nighstcape Photography Workshop, I showed Royce a copy of my Oquirrh Mountain Temple Photo. This is the photo I submitted to the Deseret Book/LDS Living photo contest a few months ago. The photo was selected to be the featured image for the month of October for their 2014 Temple Calendar. Royce liked the photo so much that he did a writeup about it on his blog:

On the night before I took this photo, I had the idea that it would be cool to take a photo of the super moon with the Oquirrh Mountain Temple in the foreground. I checked the times for the next morning’s moonset and discovered that the moon would be in about the right position relative to the temple at around 5:00am. So the next morning I got up at 4:00am, gathered my gear and drove to the temple in my little green truck.

After I parked the truck next to some new home construction and started setting up my tripod, another car pulled on to the same street and stopped next to my truck. The driver of the car was wearing a fluorescent orange shirt that is typical for construction workers to wear. The driver never got out of his car, but just sat there the whole time I was taking pictures. I’m guessing that he was there to make sure I wasn’t there to steal construction supplies. I wasn’t there to steal construction supplies, so I just kept taking photos. When I was done, I packed up and left. He stayed there.

I was showing this photo to my daughter-in-law and she proceeded to tell me that Deseret Book and LDS Living were holding a photography contest for photos of LDS Temples. Twelve photos would be selected for their 2014 Temple Calendar. So I submitted this photo along with a few others I had taken; and, as I mentioned above, this photo was selected for the month of October.

Now three of my photos have been published.
